Harbour-Link unit to acquire two container vessels for RM56.68 million

Both vessels are classed by Nippon Kaiji Kyokai and will be registered in Kuching under the Malaysian flag.

KUCHING (Oct 23): Sarawak-based Harbour-Link Group Bhd’s 85 per cent-owned subsidiary Harbour-Link Lines Sdn Bhd is acquiring two units of 90m self-propelled container vessels for a total cash consideration of RM56.68 million.

In a bursa filing on Thursday, the group said the subsidiary had on August 1 entered into two separate sale and purchase agreements (SPAs) with Sibu-based Sapor Shipbuilding Industries Sdn Bhd for the acquisition.

Each vessel is priced at RM28.34 million with the purchase consideration arrived at on a willing-buyer willing-seller basis after taking into consideration the technical specifications, market values and operational requirements of the group.

The two vessels, bearing hull numbers SAPOR 158 and SAPOR 161, will be constructed, built, sold and delivered by the vendor.

Each vessel has an overall length of 90m and a draft of 4.4m, powered by two Yanmar engines and has a complement of 14 persons plus one pilot.

Both vessels are classed by Nippon Kaiji Kyokai and will be registered in Kuching under the Malaysian flag.

Under the SPAs, payment for each vessel is staggered across construction milestones, beginning with a 20 per cent deposit upon execution of the agreement.

Subsequent payments are tied to steel cutting, keel laying, hull assembly, installation of the main engines and generators, launching and delivery of the vessel, it said.

As at the date of the announcement, only RM11.34 million or 20 per cent had been paid under the terms of the SPAs.

Delivery will take place afloat adjacent to the builder’s yard in Sibu.

The acquisition will be funded entirely by cash via internally generated funds and/or bank borrowings.

“The acquisition of the two 90m self-propelled container vessels is in line with the expansion plans of Harbour-Link Group to augment its marine fleet capacity, improve operational efficiency, and meet the growing demand for container transportation services in the region,” it said.

The group said the acquisition is not expected to have a material effect on its earnings for the current financial year.
