A total of 367 cleft lip and palate corrective surgeries have been carried out from 2004 to 2018.
The 20th edition of the Cleft Lips and Palate Association of Malaysia’s (CLAPAM) corrective surgery project here has chosen 17 needy patients for repair surgery assessment.

The registered patients are from Miri, Bario, Belaga, Baram, Serian and Bintulu, aged between one and 18 years old. The assessment tests held at Columbia Asia Hospital – Bintulu (CAHB) yesterday were conducted by a renowned plastic surgeon from Kuala Lumpur, Dr Kim Tan, and his team, followed by operations to be performed in stages until June 16.

A mock cheque presentation ceremony was held yesterday involving various sponsors namely Bintulu Port Authority, Sarawak Fertilizer Sdn Bhd, Daiken Sarawak Sdn Bhd, Harbour-Link Group Berhad, Bintulu Lion Club, and Econsave. CAH regional general manager for East Malaysia Yeoh Kim Looi was also present.

According to CAHB general manager Hazlim Sham Ibrahim, this is the third time such project is held at CAHB. “A total of 367 cleft lip and palate corrective surgeries have been carried out from 2004 to 2018,” he said. Hazlim thanked sponsors for their generous contributions in terms of cash and sundries for the campaign.

Dr Kim Tan, meanwhile, expressed gladness for being able to join the 20th trip to Sarawak since the past 15 years. “It is wonderful to come back and see all the children, all grown up now, some are five years old and some are even 16 years old coming for the final operations,” he said.
